DEICING COMPOUND (CALCIUM MAGNESIUM ACETATE)

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description, for all federal agencies.

1. Purpose. This commercial item description covers a calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) formulation designed for use as a snow and ice control agent on roads, highways, and bridges, and which can be handled and applied with the same equipment used with road salt (sodium chloride).

2. Salient characteristics.

Composition:

Ca,Mg,(C₂H₂O₂)₂(x+y)	x = 3 to 4		y = 7 to 6
Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA)		91%
Water (free and hydration)		5%
Water insoluble material		4%

Properties:

The product shall be a solid pellet containing calcium magnesium acetate, as specified above, as the active ingredient. The following properties should also be present:

Particle size:	Sieve	% Passing
	6	90 Min.
	8	10 Max.
Specific Gravity:	Minimum 1.2
Bulk Density:	44 lb/cubic foot (loose)
	48 lb/cubic foot (packed)
Product pH:	8 to 10 in a 10% solution
