This description covers a heavy duty drain opener for industrial use.
Salient characteristics:
The product shall be a liquid solution consisting of wetting agents, inhibitors and sulfuric acid. The product shall be used in the regular maintenance of sanitary drains and sewers and capable of digesting organic materials such as rags, hair, paper towels, grease, fats and soaps. When used as directed by the manufacturer, it should be safe for ferrous and lead pipes.
Acidity (H2SO4). The product shall contain a minimum of 9.40 percent sulphuric acid when tested in accordance with ASTM E 223.
The issue of ASTM E 223 in effect on the date of solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with this requirement.
Corrosion inhibition. The product shall be inhibited to minimize corrosion, whereas the weight loss of the metal shall not exceed 0.50 percent when tested as follows:
A brass coupon 1/ is cleaned with 10 percent (by volume) hydrochloric acid solution, rinsed thoroughly with tap water and distilled water. The metals are placed in an oven at 105oC for 30 minutes, cooled in desiccators and weighed. The metals are immersed in the test solution ( a dilute solution of product, 10 percent by volume), for 24 hours , rinsed thoroughly with tap water and distilled water, dried in an oven at 105oC for 30 minutes, cooled in a desiccators and weighed. The degree or corrosion is measured by the percent loss in weight.

1/ The dimensions of the brass coupons are 2 in.x 1in.1/16 in. The dimensions of the cast iron coupons are 2 in.x 1 in. x 1/8 in. The coupons can be obtained from the Chemical Specialties Manufacturer’s Assn. Inc.,
Regulatory requirements. The manufacturer shall utilize recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable. The product covered by this commercial item description shall be labelled in compliance with the Federal Hazardous Substance Act, 16 CFR 1500.
Packaging, packing, and marking. Packaging, packing, and marking shall be as specified in the contract order or order.
Note: The product should be used by experienced personnel only such as qualified maintenance personnel. The label should also include the direction for use and appropriate warning and caution statements for personal protection.
