The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this

Commercial Item Description in preference to Federal Specification

0-A-5480, dated March 22, 1974.

Salient Characteristics. This description covers antifreeze conforming to the requirements of ASTM D 3306. In addition, the antifreeze must be formulated to provide adequate corrosion resistant when used in vehicles with aluminum engine components and must have a heat transfer corrosion rate of less than 1.0 mg/cm²/week when tested in accordance with ASTM D 4340.

Certificate of Compliance. The contractor shall furnish Certificates of Compliance with all the requirements of ASTM D 3306 and provide a certificate that shall be supported by actual test reports for the antifreeze formulation offered. The specific gravity test shall be conducted for each lot or batch supplied to the government.

Packaging/Packing/Marking. The antifreeze/coolant shall be packaged in accordance with normal commercial practice and packed to assure acceptance by common carrier and provide product protection against loss and damage during multiple shipment, handling, and storage. The shipping container shall be in compliance with National Motor Freight Classification and Uniform Freight Classification. Marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.

Notes: ASTM standards are available from the American Society for Testing and Materials, 1916 Race Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103. The issue of the ASTM test methods in effect on the date of solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.
